iPhone 5: 10 features to expect
Few things cause as much hype as Apple products: the company’s mantra of secrecy sees to it that expectation and speculation is rampant before any official releases.
And the rumoured iPhone 5 is no exception.
However, with less than a month to go now before the iPhone 5 is expected to be announced, what can we realistically expect to see?
Well, if anyone is after a new revelation in the smartphone market, be prepared to be disappointed. As with the iPhone 4S, the next generation iPhone – if there really is one – is going to continue the theme of “evolution”, not “revolution”.
The short version is that physically, the iPhone 5 will be slightly taller and slightly thinner than the current iPhone.
Additionally, it’ll have the headphone jack in a different place, and a new smaller connector plug that is going to annoy the hell out of anyone with an existing dock.
The main selling point, however, will likely to be improved user experience. This has always been Apple’s focus, and this is unlikely to change under Tim Cook’s direction. And it’s likely to be centred on improvements to the latest operating system release: iOS 6.
Expected features of the iPhone 5
The rumour mill to date is unlikely to be either fully accurate or comprehensive in terms of what an iPhone 5 will deliver. After all, we were all expecting an “iPhone 5″ branded release this time last year.
This is despite a number of supposed leaks from hardware manufacturers in Asia.
However, these are the points currently being roundly agreed upon:
1. Larger display area
The iPhone 5 will be taller, by about a centimetre. Additionally, it will have a screen that is closer to the edge of the casing. The result is a significantly larger display for your money.
2. The thinnest smartphone on the market
If reports on the new iPhone 5′s dimensions are anything to go by, it’ll measure somewhere in the region of 58.47mm x 123.83mm x 7.6mm. This will be 2mm thinner than the current iPhone 4S, and 1mm thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy SIII.
If true, it’ll be quite a coup for the marketing department, if it can proclaim Apple has the thinnest and lightest smartphone on the market, therefore inferring innovation.
3. NFC support
We expected support for NFC (Near Field Communication technology) on the iPhone 4S – therefore enabling the iPhone to function as an electronic wallet.
The rumour refuses to die that Apple will implement this in the next generation iPhone.
4. Improved video
One area where Apple tend to get caught out are the camera specifications. Your older 5MP iPhone may take photos as good if not better quality than on a HTC boasting a 8MP camera – but it still sounds wrong.
The iPhone 4S announced an improved camera, but there may be room to improve HD video recording specifically.
5. Improved battery life
Part of the rumoured iPhone 5 design changes include specific allowance for a slightly larger battery. While Apple devices are definitely in the strongest end when it comes to battery life, faster processors take up more power. So the battery here is expected to improve in line with a new improved quad processor.
6. 4G/LTE support
We saw LTE support rolled out on the latest iPad – unfortunately, targeted squarely at the US market. Everythingeverywhere is still looking for a limited 4G roll-out this autumn, though whether any LTE support specs on a new iPhone will make a difference to British users remains to be seen.
We know Steve Jobs was concerned about how this would drain the battery – but as we’ve already seen, the iPhone 5 is rumoured to be bigger in part to take a larger battery.
7. New connector and jack location
Part of the new design changes involve a migration of the headphone jack from one end to the other – but perhaps more importantly, the strongest rumours are of a new 8-pin plug being introduced across the Apple product range.
Perhaps intended to create a more efficient experience, a lot of people are unlikely to be happy with this as it means existing docking peripherals will not work, as the iPhone 5 will be the wrong shape, with the wrong connection, for use.
8. iOS6: Smoother user experience
Simple user experience improvements to the apps store are expected. For example, not having to login just to download a free app and use it is an obvious one. However, while there have been leaks about hardware specifications, Apple has any software surprises firmly under wraps.
The fact that iOS6 is expected to be launched in conjunction with a refreshed iPhone5 means that we can expect some user-experience improvements – some of which may quite surprise us.
9. September 12th
Initial speculation suggested a launch date in October – however, mumbles from manufacturers has been interpreted as meaning thatApple intend to announce the iPhone 5 mid-September, most likely around September 12th. Pre-orders would go live, but here in the UK we’re not likely to see any new handset on our shores until at least October.
10. Secret sauce
Most rumours to date have focused on hardware – as we’ve mentioned above, though, it will be the iPhone’s integration with new iOS 6 features that will really make it stand out.
Claiming to be the thinnest and lightest smartphone on earth would be a great advertising slogan, but it’s how iOS features evolve with the new iPhone 5 that will be the key focus.
However, don’t be surprised if Apple try and pull a few tricks out of the bag to deflate competitors.
While Android phones have really advanced over the past year, they still suffer from a fragmented ecosystem, despite attempts to otherwise order it.
With Google and Microsoft trying to follow Apple’s lead in the Cloud, this is one area Apple could really through the gauntlet down – not least with far more free space to backup with.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Comparison
The iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 battle has been taken up to a whole new level. A video has been released showing a 3D rendered comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the upcoming Apple iPhone 5.
iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 (3D video)
As the date for the launch of the iPhone 5 comes ever closer rumors are flying around and images have been leaked. The latest is a video that aims to put all these speculations into a comparison. The design of the iPhone 5 was based on leaks from iLab Factory in Asia.
The iPhone 5 shown in the video is longer and has a thinner display with a smaller dock connector and what seems to be a unibody. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is shown alongside the iPhone 5 in comparison. At the moment there is nothing to suggest that any of the features will actually be on the device when it is released. There is a rumor going around that Apple will launch the handset on 12th September and it should be available for pre-order on the same day.
With the launch date not far away the excitement continues to grow and let’s hope that the new iPhone 5 will be able to live up to all the hype it is generating and will be an improvement over the iPhone 4S. Check out the 3D video battle between the iPhone 5 & Samsung Galaxy S3 below.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S: This Apple Has Expired
With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung pulled off something that set the device apart from all others on the market. This is the device that Apple will have to beat with the release of their upcoming iPhone 5. However until then the iPhone 4S will be left fending off the S3. So what are the chances it can hold the fort until then? Let’s find out.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S
The display on the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be hard to beat thanks to its 4.8 inch Super AMOLED with a resolution of 1280 x 720. The current iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inch display with 960 x 640 pixels and it is of course Retina but outdated compared to the S3 nonetheless.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133g and the iPhone 4S is 140g, so it feels lighter in the hand than the iPhone 4S. On the plus side the iPhone 4S is easier to put in the pocket thanks to the smaller display. The iPhone 4S looks more solid than the plastic look of the Samsung Galaxy S3 as well.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a quad core processor from Qualcomm internationally and dual core in the US. It comes with 1GB RAM internationally and 2GB in the US. Overall the US version does better in benchmarks. The iPhone 4S has 512MB and an 800MHz dual-core processor. As the S3 is the most powerful of the two, it wins.
Both of the handsets come with 8 megapixel cameras and the front camera of the S3 is 1.9 megapixels while the iPhone 4S has a 0.3 megapixel. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with zero shutter lag and it has burst mode. With both of them using the same chip they should give the same results when photos are taken in low light although the S3′s software has more added extras as mentioned above.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 2,100mAh battery that is removable while the 1420mAh battery on the iPhone 4S is not. The S3 provides users with about three times the talk time of the iPhone 4S.
While the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes out of top as the winner, this is simple because it was designed to take on the iPhone 5, not the 4S. As for the iPhone 4S, there is no reason to buy one now. If you can’t wait for an iPhone 5 then jump on the Samsung Galaxy S3. If you still want a 4S, then hang on as its price tag is expected to continue sliding as the iPhone 5 nears.

Can iPhone 5 Match The Samsung Galaxy S3?
There is not much on the market at the moment to beat the Samsung Galaxy S3. However this may change when Apple launches their latest iPhone, so could the iPhone 5 beat the Galaxy S3 when it is released?
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5
At the moment Apple has not let anything slip about the iPhone 5 and so we can only speculate about the specs of the new iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S3 however comes with a 1280 x 720 display with 310ppi. The iPhone 5 could have a larger screen than previous models but it is thought that it will only be 4 inches at the most and 1280 x 720 with 367ppi.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is run by the dual core Snapdragon processor here in the US and the iPhone 5 may have the A5X processor. Both of these processors are superb and it will be down to benchmark tests to show us the winner by a hair strand.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 had the latest Android OS when it came out and the same should apply to the iPhone 5 when it comes out, so it should have iOS 6. The S3 may be updated to Jelly Bean before the end of the month but there is nothing concrete.
The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 8 megapixels and it comes with zero shutter lag and a burst mode. The iPhone 5 may also have a camera of 8 megapixels.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available in 16 GB, 32GB or 64GB versions and they have support for an external SD card to boost storage. The iPhone 5 is not expected to support SD cards and it may be available in similar internal storage options so in terms of space, the S3 remains a winner.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with S Beam, S Voice, Pop Up Play and Smart Stay. The iPhone 5 could have Face Unlock, Siri 2, new Maps app, Passbook and many more features via iOS 6.
Which of the handsets is the best will come down to the fact of whether you want an Android OS handset or an iOS device as in terms of hardware and features, they will likely end up on the same level. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the most popular handset of the moment but this could all change with the release of the iPhone 5… as long as it is a bigger upgrade than the 4S was from the 4.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Why I Gave Up On Apple Already
There are many rumors going around about the devices that should be coming out in the next couple of months. These include the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the latest iPhone 5. Until then one of the best smartphones on the market is the Samsung Galaxy S3. It has broken pre-order records and is one of the most advanced smartphones on the market at the moment. So should you go out and get it or wait to see what Apple offer with the iPhone 5?
iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Why I gave up waiting for Apple
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is out now of course and this is a bonus for those wanting a handset right now. The iPhone 5 is rumored for launch in one month and then there will be a wait for it to get onto the shelves. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the superb 4.8 inch screen which is another plus as the iPhone 5 is expected to come with a screen of around 4 inches only.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers charging wirelessly and this is not something that you are likely to see on the iPhone 5 on its release. The S3 has a large battery that is removable and this is another thing that will let the iPhone 5 down as rumors suggest its battery will be much smaller (and Apple doesn’t provide the option to swap batteries on the go). Also the lack of an external SD card option is annoying with the iPhone 5 and this is something the Samsung Galaxy S3 has.
There are HDMI outputs with the Samsung Galaxy S3 so you can hook the handset up to HDTV if you desire. There has been nothing that suggests that Apple will include this with their latest generation iPhone 5.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is expected to be updated the Jelly Bean before the month is up and then it will have the latest Android OS. This should bring Google Now and provide users with an update to S Voice, which is said to be better sounding than Siri.
While the iPhone 5 may be a huge hit with Apple fans, it is not expected to be better than the S3 in terms of hardware or software, but merely matching it. Given that I am not partial to either OS, I jumped on a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 last week already and haven’t regretted it… yet.

Samsung Starts US Sales of Galaxy Note 10.1
Samsung Electronics Co. is taking another shot at the dominance of Apple's iPad with a tablet equipped with a digital pen and a faster processor at the same price tag.
The Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 will go on sale in the U.S. from Thursday. The price starts at $499 for the basic model with 16 GB storage and $549 for the 32 GB model, expandable with an external memory card.
Apple's latest iPad starts at the same price but the Note 10.1 offers some features that the iPad doesn't have, while its screen resolution is lower than the iPad's. It is Samsung's first Android tablet equipped with a digital pen and can run two applications side-by-side on a screen divided in half.
The split screen, made possible by the quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, can be useful when taking notes while watching a video or surfing the Internet.
Analysts said this capability of the Note tablet is intended to attract business and education customers, a strategy that could be more effective than going all out against the iPad, which already dominates nearly 70 percent of the worldwide tablet market.
Samsung released about a half dozen Android tablets in the last two years under the Galaxy Tab series but none of them has been as popular as the iPad. Analysts say Android tablets are less successful because of a dearth of applications and higher prices.
But with the Note 10.1, the South Korean company believes it has a product that will find favor with corporations and schools despite the iPad's rich pool of applications and sharper screen.
While Apple makes one new model for the iPhone and iPad every year to meet demand from all around the world, Samsung releases multiple mobile products with variations in prices, screen sizes, hardware and operating systems.
This strategy helped Samsung edge pass Apple in smartphone sales but hasn't paid off in the tablet area, probably because Samsung's previous tablets were not differentiated enough from the iPad. Samsung's second-quarter market share in the global tablet market fell to 9 percent, while nearly seven out of 10 tablets in the market were emblazoned with Apple logo, according to IHS iSuppli.
Analysts say they see how multitasking, the note-taking feature and other tasks that can be done with the digital pen can help differentiate the Galaxy Note 10.1 from the iPad, something that may grab the attention of professional artists, educators and businesses if these features are executed smoothly.
"I think the video on the left and note-taking on the right half of the screen can be widely used for educational purposes," said Lee Sei-cheol, a technology analyst at Meritz Securities.
Samsung has improved the pressure-sensitive pen to make it feel more natural and accurate since the "S Pen" digital pen was first introduced with the Galaxy Note last year. The unexpected success of the 5.3-inch hybrid of a smartphone and a tablet emboldened Samsung to further explore the digital pen features.
There are also some 30 applications for sketching and note taking as well as Adobe Photoshop Touch and games where S Pen comes in handier than touching the screen. Samsung plans to expand the list of applications that support multitasking, which is currently limited to six, an official said.

Samsung designer says Galaxy Tab 10.1 was in the works before the iPad
Now that Apple has rested its case, Samsung is on the offensive to try to demonstrate to the jury that it didn’t copy the iPhone and iPad when it comes to certain design elements and that it didn’t infringe various Apple patents that cover certain functions also available on some of Samsung’s Android smartphones and tablets.
The task at hand is rather difficult for Samsung especially considering the kind of internal Samsung documents that Apple brought before the jury, including a memo and a very detailed comparison between the iPhone 3GS and the first Galaxy S prototypes.
Both items revealed Samsung’s desire to make more competitive mobile products that would resemble the iPhone when it comes to design and ease of use, although neither one implied that Samsung designers and engineers have to copy the iPhone or iPad to achieve such goals.
Today, Samsung’s Jin Soo Kim, Samsung’s principal designer who took the stand and testified through an interpreter said that the South Korean company was already working on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet at the time the original iPad was launched. Kim talked about an internal e-mail thread, dated January 6, 2010, in which the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was discussed.
Now, if Samsung wants to win this thing, or at least win a decent enough settlement with Apple, it should definitely do better than this. At the time – January 2010 – there were plenty of iPad-related rumors floating around the web, ahead of what was to become one of the most anticipated Apple keynotes, as everyone and their grandmother knew Apple was going to unveil a tablet. So did Samsung start talking about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 as a response to the iPad?
Sure, that can’t be proved in court based on email exchanges, but if Samsung was indeed working on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ahead of the original iPad’s announcement, why did Samsung only launch the Galaxy Tab 7 in fall 2010, roughly half a year after the iPad hit stores? Why was the Galaxy Tab 10.1 introduced only at MWC 2011, only to be redesigned and reannounced at CTIA 2011? Between those trade shows, Apple launched the iPad 2, which prompted Samsung to change certain design elements and features of the 10.1-inch tablet announced at MWC, renaming the original version the Galaxy Tab 10.1v, while the second model became the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that eventually sold in a variety of markets.
Kim did a better job explaining that Samsung’s design choices are related to the functionality of the device, rather than to a need to copy Apple. He explained the use of a flat surface rather than a curved one for the tablet, the bezel’s purpose and the choice in size:
“The bezel acts like a bumper on a car, it is to protect the device, so really it’s for the user,” Kim said.
Kim also went into detail on how the company settled on a size, noting that 10.1-inches was in a sweet spot where Samsung could get a certain amount of displays from a larger piece of glass, without ending up with waste.
“We start with a mother glass, and if you were to increase the display size, or glass to be cut by even 0.1 inch, that instead of 50 glasses from the mother glass you’d end up with 30-35 units only,” Kim explained.
Galaxy Tab 10.1N (above) vs Galaxy Tab 10.1 (below)
Again, we can’t disregard another strangeness in Kim’s testimony – the “sweet spot” argument can be easily countered by the fact that Samsung also launched a variety of Android tablets when it comes to size: 7-inch, 10.1-inch, 8.9-inch and 7.7-inch.
One could also argue here that other Galaxy Tab 10.1 designs are possible – just look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1N version that Samsung created for the German market where the regular Galaxy Tab 10.1 was banned for infringing Apple patents – but Samsung chose not to explore them until it faced unfavorable rulings in certain markets. And the slightly redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1N is not banned in the country.
Leaving such details aside, we’ll also mention Apple’s cross-examination, which referred to other internal Samsung documents that mentioned Google’s explicit requests for Samsung to redesign the 7- and early 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab versions – “make [the Galaxy Tab 10.1] notably different, starting with the front side – as they were “too similar to Apple.” Kim apparently did not receive Google’s memos, as his supervisors never told him about such issues with the Search giant.
In other words, Samsung’s attorneys are trying as best they can to show that Samsung’s smartphone and tablet design and feature choices have been made for purely functional reasons, but they are having, and will have, a rather hard time convincing the jury that’s the only thing that happened, as most of the presented evidence speaks so far in Apple’s favor.
We’ll be back with more news from the U.S. Apple vs Samsung trial as we have plenty of time left on the clock between this giant fight between titans.
