iPhone 5 vs Windows Phone 8: Skip Device Wars and Manage BYOD
The BYOD wave is about to get bigger. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) unveiled its Windows Phone 8 Lumia smartphones yesterday.Amazon Kindle 2 could surface Sept. 6. Apple apparently willlaunch iPhone 5 on Sept. 12. And the world is bracing for Microsoft Surface tablets and other Windows 8 devices on Oct. 26. For channel partners the message is clear: Don’t get caught up in the device platform wars. Instead, help customers develop clear BYOD (bring your own device) policies before the holiday season brings another wave of new devices into the office.
Ironically, some of the best advice on BYOD policies comes from The White House. Check that link and you’ll find a toolkit to help federal agencies master BYOD, mobile device management, and mobile applications management. Related case studies cover:

It’s a massive document but worth your time. As a general baseline, VARs should be supporting Google Android and Apple iOS mobile devices, with strong consideration for Windows Phone 8 and Research in Motion (especially in government). The Windows Phone 8 support could be especially important as Microsoft promotes integration with Exchange Server, SharePoint, Lync and Office 365.
Simply put: Microsoft hopes its business applications can drive smart phone wins.
But again, VARs should avoid the platform wars and take a holistic view of the smartphone and tablet markets. Regardless of which operating system wins, customers are going to need flexible — but well-defined — BYOD policies as new devices flood the market in the days and weeks ahead.
