iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Age Is Just A Number
Even though there are numerous new Android handsets coming onto the market, the iPhone 4S still remains popular. So let’s see how it stands up to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, an Android that was introduced back in 2011 yet still continues to reign popular just like the iPhone 4S has.
iPhone 4s vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus
When you first look at the two handsets, they look well designed and unique from the sea of other smartphones on the market. They both have clear screens and sleek designs basically. The iPhone 4S comes in metal and glass with a 3.5 inch screen and striking looks. It weighs 140 grams, it does have a somewhat boxy look to it and it can be quite awkward to hold if you are used to rounded devices. The Nexus comes with its biggest selling point, the 4.65 inch display. The back of the device is made in textured plastic, but it lacks the sturdy feeling. Compared to some of the other handsets on the market, it is a large device but it does have a thin design and curved edges and at 13 grams, it is easy to hold and fits into the pocket easily.
Surfing the net on the iPhone 4S is a good experience thanks to the display which makes reading text and viewing images a pleasure. However side by side with the Nexus, the screen does look small and this is noticeable when watching videos. The 8 megapixel camera is far better than the 5 megapixel on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the multimedia experience is superb thanks to iTunes, which is one of the largest providers when it comes to media content and apps. Unfortunately, you also need iTunes on your PC to keep your device up to date and perform syncing, something that many folks would dislike and even consider extra bloat.
The screen on the Nexus is superb for navigating the internet. Users are able to upload YouTube video instantly which is a great feature. The front camera of 1.3 megapixels is better than the 1 megapixel of the iPhone 4S, slightly. The Nexus stands out thanks to its editing features and has a panorama feature which is very cool. However, the quality of the rear camera shots needs to be improved. The Nexus comes with face detection and touch to focus along with Bluetooth, tethering for mobile hotspots and it supports video capture along with playback at 1080p.
The call quality on each of the handsets depends on which carrier you have chosen to go with. Call quality on the iPhone 4S is generally high and it comes with the latest operating system, runs on the A5 processor of Apple at 800MHz, and has decent download speeds (HSPA supported). Users typically get around 8 hours of normal use when the handset has a full charge.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a higher clocked 1.2GHz processor which is dual core and offers faster uploads than the 4S. Battery life is around 5 hours from a full charge when used normally though.
The LED display of the iPhone is 960 x 640 and thanks to the Retina display, it has enough pixels to ensure pixelation is unnoticeable. The ambient light sensor will adjust the brightness of the screen, it has a multi-touch sensitive screen and there is a proximity sensor. The Nexus has a Super AMOLED display at 1280 x 720 and while it does not have the Retina display of the iPhone, it is gorgeous nonetheless. It comes with ambient light sensor, proximity sensor and the screen is multi-touch. It also has an LED indicator which can be programmed to display a different color depending on the kind of notification (e.g. missed call, SMS, Gmail, etc).
The user interface of the iPhone 4S is intuitive and nothing has changed from the other iterations of the iPhone. Quick access to the camera is a welcome feature when the screen is locked as is the notification area which drops down and is customizable. Siri can also be launched with just one click.
The layout on the Nexus can take some time to learn but it is very customizable. It has widgets which can personalize the homescreens. There is also quick access to the camera and it features an easy screenshot function.
