Samsung Galaxy S3 vs S2: Is It A Major Upgrade?
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the most sought after handsets at the moment. But if you have the S2 is it worth making the upgrade to the newer model? Let’s take a look at the specs and features to find the answer to this question.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs S2: should you upgrade?
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is heavier and larger than its predecessor is. It weighs in at 133g and measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm. the S2 slips into the pocket easier at 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm and weighs 116g. The Galaxy S2 is available in white or black, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is on sale in pebble blue or marble white.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the advantage of having the larger screen at 4.8 inches in comparison to the 4.3 inch on the Galaxy S2. Both screens have Gorilla Glass, with the S3 having Gorilla Glass 2. However, there is not a lot of difference between them and it was found that the screen shattered on the S3 quicker than the iPhone 4S in a recent drop test, hence suggesting that Gorilla Glass 2 may not be all that better. The screen on the S3 comes with 1280 x 720 resolution, which beats the 800 x 480 resolution of the S2.
Camera wise both have an 8 megapixel which is able to take photos with a 3264 x 2448 resolution. They also have features which include smile detection, auto focus and LED flash. The front camera on the Samsung Galaxy S3 stands out in that it comes with a higher megapixel count and the back camera has burst mode and it can record video while at the same time, taking photos. So if you do a lot of video chatting, the better front facing camera matters.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 has the dual core 1.2GHz A9 Cortex processor and it comes out of the box with Android 2.3.4. There will be an upgrade to ICS Android 4.0 very soon. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with Android 4.0 and will be upgraded with Jelly Bean sometime this year. In the US the S3 comes with a dual core chipset and internationally it is quad core.
Memory wise the S2 has 32GB of internal storage and it supports micro SD up to 32GB max. The S3 is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options and it also supports mini SD card up to another 64GB. You may want to bear in mind that for most users 16GB internal storage with a memory card is more than enough.
The battery is increased by around three hours with the Samsung Galaxy S3. This means users will get around 12 hours of talking on the S3.
New features of the Samsung Galaxy S3 include S Voice, Smart Stay and Smart Call. However when the S2 is upgraded to ICS it too will have these features. The S3 is a better device naturally, as it is the latest model in the Galaxy S series. If you own the S2 and your contract is near its end then it is worth the upgrade. If you have a while to go on contract then it may be worthwhile hanging on for the S4 or perhaps the Galaxy Note 2 instead. The S3 is not really a major upgrade when you take into account the jump from the Galaxy S up to the S2 was.
