Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 Vs. 2012 iPod Touch Vs. Google Nexus 7 – No Real Contest
Those awaiting confirmation of the 2012 iPod Touch release date from Apple have this week been thrown a rather temptingalternative option – the new Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8. Available with a range of screen sizes between 3.6-inches and 5-inches, the new Galaxy Player certainly seems to have what it takes to stand up against the iPod Touch.
Give the Galaxy Player 5.8 a passing glance and chances are you’d think it was a Samsung Galaxy S3 – which is of course hardly a bad thing. Screen sizes and dimensions are however slightly different and you certainly won’t be creditedwith the same pixel density as the S3 Smartphone – certainly not the iPhone 4S Retina display.
Galaxy Player 5.8 buyers will find Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich behind the driving seat with the usual TouchWiz interface from Samsung. 32GB and 16GB variants are available – both with 1GB of RAM and microSD slot for further storage. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth round off what is undoubtedly a superb package, which is expected to start from about $200 to $250.
However – and sadly it is a rather big however – all of the above is missing at least one or two key ingredients likely to ruin the Galaxy Player 5.8’s chances of competing at the highest levels.
For one thing, the Galaxy Player 5.8 falls short of the iPod Touch experience by failing to feature a rear-mounted camera – immediately limiting both functionality and use of hundreds of popular Apps. What’s more, rumor has it that the 2012 iPod Touch release date will bring Apple’s first series of media players with optional 3G – low-calorie iPhones, if you will.
And finally, if the $200-ish pricing point for the entry-level Galaxy Player 5.8 proves accurate, buyers will be forced to choose between a rather limited media player and the colossal Google Nexus 7 – also starting from $200.
The time has come for a media player to break the mold in order to survive – the SamsungGalaxy Player 5.8 is truly great, but sadly that’s as far as it goes.
