AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III Release Date and Main Feature Breakdown
The Samsung Galaxy S III for the AT&T 4G LTE network is offered in your choice of either Pebble Blue or Marble White colors, and is rumored to release somewhere between June 18 and June 21. AT&T has not given a specific launch date yet, but we do know a few of the main features the handset will offer. We found a current retail price of $199 on contract at select online retailers, but there is no word if the handset is the same price at other retailers or if that is a discounted prelaunch retail price. Both T-Mobile and Sprint have already officially announced the arrival of the Galaxy S III on their networks on June 21, so that lends some credence to that day as a launch date.
A couple of technical specifications which are important and which have been confirmed are the presence of 2 GB of RAM memory for one of the first times in a US handset, high resolution display, fast processor and one of the largest screens in the entire 4G smartphone marketplace. The handset also delivers the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system out-of-the-box, complete with Samsung’s TouchWiz UX UI overlay. Surprisingly slim and light for all the hardware and software packed inside, the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III measures only 0.34 inches (8.6 mm) and weighs only 4.69 ounces (133 g).
The display is a full 4.80 inches, and renders visuals in more than 16 million separate colors and 306 pixels per inch. That creates an overall screen resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels on the Super AMOLED screen, which is protected by a layer of second generation Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Standard proximity and light sensors help conserve battery life on the oversized 2,100 mA cell, and there is no early word on battery performance.
A Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon microchip package is on board to power the SGS III, and includes a dual core 1.5 GHz central processor and graphics dedicated Adreno 225 GPU. The above-mentioned 2.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, as is 16 GB of built-in storage. A microSD slot provides storage expansion capabilities and off-board data access, and also supports microSDHC and microSDXC formats.
An FM Stereo with RDS joins a proprietary YouTube video player and built-in music player in the multimedia package, and a rear mounted 8.0 megapixel camcorder provides simultaneous HD video and image recording, at a high resolution 1,080P HD. There is a front facing chat cam also on board, and the Samsung Galaxy S III for AT&T delivers Facebook, Picasa and Twitter social media applications out-of-the-box, as well as Near Field Communications (NFC) support. The Samsung Galaxy S III is available for pre-order starting at $199.
