iPhone 5 rumors: next iPhone not likely at WWDC 2012
According to Therese Poletti at MarketWatch, the iPhone 5 could be expected to be released at the upcoming WWDC as sales of the device have reportedly gone down.
However, the article notes that various analysts see the WWDC as a software-focused conference.
The iOS 6 and an upgrade of its OS X software for the Macintosh are expected to be unveiled this month.
“Frankly I would be very surprised if they do announce the iPhone 5,” Sterne Agee Shaw Wu is quoted as saying in an interview. “We think WWDC will be more about software.”
Wu believes Cupertino will release the iPhone 5 in the fall, but added that with Apple, “you never know.”
In addition, Poletti remarks that Apple has the habit of not commenting on unannounced products.
In April, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, specified the two operating systems the company plans to unveil.
”We have a great WWDC planned this year and can’t wait to share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion with developers,” he said.
Also, a new maps application for the iPhone and the iPad will reportedly be introduced by Apple as part of the new iOS 6 in order to reduce the software’s dependence on Google.
9to5 Mac, reported that Apple has developed its own mapping app.
“We are expecting some significant developments around the Apple Ecosystem — the ‘glue’ that sustains its momentum,” Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes stated on Monday, adding that refreshed versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are expected at the event.
“We believe innovations, new software, more NAND options and more attractive pricing could catalyze sales — with the potential to double the run-rate sales of portables at Apple within a few quarters.”
Reitzes also wrote that he believes the iPhone 5 will be released in the fall.
