It has been a long time coming, but one of the contenders in the smartphone battle of 2012 – the Samsung Galaxy S3 – has finally revealed itself.
Launched at an event in London last week, the Galaxy S3 is due for release in a matter of weeks. But it takes two to tango, and so far we only have one half of the showdown.
While the likes of the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC One X would like to think they have a chance, the
iPhone 5 is realistically the only true contender.
Rumours abound of an autumn launch – roughly a year after the iPhone 4S. Only time will tell if the S3 will be as successful as its predecessor, but one thing is for sure – Apple will need to be at the top of its game to compete. So what does the iPhone need to contend?

Early reviews of the S3 have suggested that the bumper quad-core processor gives the device a lightning-fast speed, reducing lag time between apps and pages.
The iPhone 5 will need to be equally as speedy, especially as smartphone users everywhere get used to the high power and speed. A quad-core unit is largely expected in the next-gen device, probably be the Apple A6

One of the most striking things about the S3 is its large, 4.8-inch screen. While a bigger display isn’t to everyone’s taste, the pixel density has been upped from the S2 to 306ppi with a resolution of 720×1280.
Rumours abound that Apple is considering increasing the screen size for the next iPhone, possibly a 4.6-inch retina display. If this is the case, it will more than match the S3.

The specs will clearly be fantastic in the iPhone 5, so it could come down to a case of ecosystem preference for users.
But the S3 has been seen by some as similar to the
iPhone 4S – it looks like more of an upgrade of the S2 rather than a completely new model. So if Apple makes the
iPhone 5 a truly next-gen device, it could wipe the floor with Samsung.
