Apple iPhone 4S Vs Samsung Galaxy S3: What Suits Power Users?
The iPhone 4S is Apple’s top of the line smartphone with a close to 96% satisfaction rate. Another smartphone that has been gaining considerable amount of media attention is Samsung Galaxy S3, which has flourished to be one of the most popular Android smartphone. It is currently sailing high with positive reviews and good sales figures. Nonetheless, iPhone 4S puts up an equally good competition when pitched against Samsung Galaxy S3 in all possible ways.
A JP Morgan estimate informs that Samsung Galaxy S3 sold 6.5 million Galaxy S3 devices in Q2. HI Investment & Securities senior analyst Song Myung Sub told Reuters recently he expects Samsung to sell 15 million Galaxy S3 phones in the next quarter (Q2). It indeed proves beyond a shadow of doubt that the Korean giant is breaking grounds with Apple in the smartphone war.
Now speaking of iPhone, after US it is China which is the second largest market for the smartphone consumption. Apple sold over 5 million iPhones in first quarter, courtesy Gartner. Apple iPhone 4S is available in more than 100 countries and close to 230 carriers. The introduction of Apple iPhone 4S helped take the company’s iPhone sales to 33.1 million units in the first quarter, whereas the second quarter of 2012 saw only 26 million iPhone units being shipped. The disappointing sales of iPhone in second quarter is attributed to the rumors on the upcoming sixth generation iPhone. The figures speaks the volume of both Apple and Samsung. In fact Apple and Samsung now represent nearly half of all smartphones sold globally.
Here is a look at how Apple iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S3 fairs against each other.
Display:
Apple iPhone 4S has LED-backlit IPS TFT display with oleophobic coating which repels fingerprint oil. The LED-backlit IPS TFT display found in iPhone 4S age slower as the brightness and color balances well for use of thousands of hours. With 330 ppi sharpness and RGB layout in it’s screen, iPhone 4S has the brightness advantage over Super AMOLED. On the other hand Samsung’s Galaxy S3 has Super AMOLED displays that uses the company’s Pentile matrix sub-pixel design. In fact Super-AMOLED’s have better lifetime and contrast than iPhone’s display. Moreover, Super AMOLED displays has bluish hue that overcasts the screen whereas iPS-LCD found in iPhone 4S brings out more natural colors. The HD 1280 x 700 pixel makes up for the flaws in Galaxy S3 whereas iPhone 4S with 640 x 960 pixel resolution stays equally close to Sammy’s device. As far as protection is considered, both the screens have Corning Gorilla glass to protect the display from scratches.
Samsung Galaxy S3 is highly praised for its 4.8-inch display and is a great hit among users. Some doubts loom over the smaller 3.5-inch screen found in iPhone 4S as bigger screens are turning to be a real crowd puller. However that is not the case according to Piper Jaffray’s analyst Gene Munster. According to the conducted survey, based on two unlabeled scale drawings of an iPhone and a Droid Razr Maxx (4.3-inch display), 56% respondents preferred the smaller screen of iPhone. This proves that users who are familiar with smaller screen displays may not prefer bigger ones. This makes Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S stand sturdy in their respective divisions.
Processor:
Samsung Galaxy S3 has quad-core processor and some variants feature dual-core processor. While iPhone 4S comes with dual-core CPU. It is to be noted that the improvement in performance gained by the use of a multi-core processor depends very much on the software algorithms used and their implementation. More cores doesn’t mean faster speed, however it does affect multi-tasking.
Speaking on multi-tasking, the word better suites the 10-inch above screen division occupied by tablets. Smartphones which comes with smaller displays need more speedy performance than multi-tasking effort. Moreover, quad-core has its own disadvantages when in use. Apart from operating system adjustments and existing application software changes, the ability of multi-core processors to increase application performance depends on the use of multiple threads within applications.
Apple iPhone 4S with its eco-system holds an absolute edge as the company manufactures its own OS and hardware. It shows that Apple can modify their software codes in such a way that advanced processors famously found in other big Android phones doesn’t have a major role to play in terms of speed. Hence the usage in Apple iPhone 4S looks silky smooth and provides blazing fast speeds while using different applications. Pinch to zoom is an unmatchable feature found in the device.
Operating System:
Samsung Galaxy S3 features Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Backed by world’s number one mobile OS platform, Android, the device makes customization and tweaks look easy. Apple on the other hand opts for simplicity and users get what they require, whereas Android offering tweaks make users search for functions which can be annoying at times.
Android OS holds advantage in terms of turn-by-turn voice navigation, Google services, camera tools, NFC support, openness, facial unlocking and Android Beam. Apple iOS 5 graces itself with music integration, App Store, iTunes, iMessage, iCloud, Siri and FaceTime.
Camera:
It is disappointing to see Samsung using Galaxy S2 sensor in their latest flagship device. Experts judge that iPhone 4S camera is better than Galaxy S2. However, that does not mean Galaxy S3 camera is bad. It is only a familiar hardware used with improved software optimization.
Galaxy S3 advantages over iPhone 4S:
Samsung Galaxy S3 has twice the RAM capacity, is slightly thinner, lighter, distinctly with more battery power, more megapixel secondary camera, bigger display with higher resolution, faster downloads, smaller semdiconductor and faster CPU clock speed. The well known features only found in Galaxy S3 which iPhone 4S doesn’t have is free navigation software, Adobe flash, charging through standard USB cable, wireless charging, removable battery, HDMI output, microSD slot, DLNA and NFC.
iPhone 4S advantages over Galaxy S3:
Apple’s flagship handset has less body volume, narrow body, shorter, higher pixel density, faster uploads, more internal storage option, direct updates from OS vendor, more apps and a dedicated camera button.
Flaws reported in Galaxy S3:
Various flaws reported on the Korean giant’s device include malfunction in microphone, battery drain issue, overheating and signal dropping while using Wi-Fi.
Flaws reported in iPhone 4S:
Apple iPhone 4S experiences reduced battery life, not able to connect efficiently to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connection failure and Siri related complaints.
Conclusively, both the handsets are marginally close and has its own drawbacks and gains. Apple iPhone 4S certainly has shown itself to be a worthy competitor for Galaxy S3. Although Galaxy S3 has flaws, the handset’s features and specs does give iPhone 4S a run for its money. Moreover, during drop tests Galaxy S3 proved to be more sturdy piece than iPhone 4S.
