What the Apple iPhone 5 Needs to Beat the Samsung Galaxy S3
It should just be a short while longer before Apple unleashes its next-generation smartphone, the iPhone 5. However, Samsung’s remarkably successful Galaxy S3 would pose a tough challenge to the iPhone 5, considering the “overwhelming demand” for the South Korean company’s latest flagship. As such, Apple has its work cut out for it if it wants to keep its standing on top of the high-end smartphone marketplace.
The rumors of a thinner chassis are a pretty good start. If the Cupertino-based firm indeed uses in-cell technology that integrates the touch screen into a single display panel, the sixth-generation iPhone could be as thin as 7.6-mm, a full millimeter thinner than its Korean competitor.
We haven’t heard firm rumors on the camera, but the next-generation iPhone should feature an equivalent or better snapper than the Galaxy S3. Apple could either bump up the maximum resolution of the iPhone’s camera, improve the optics to capture better images or both. Either way, software improvements to integrate many of the Galaxy S3 camera’s features should be a given. The front-facing camera should also be updated to match the Samsung’s 1.9-megapixel unit.
Behind the screen, the iPhone 5 should have a quad-core chipset to compete directly with the international version of the Galaxy S3. While the North American Galaxy S3 doesn’t come with the quad-core Exynos chipset, quad-core Android handsets are expected to arrive later this year. If Apple doesn’t stick in a quad-core chipset, a higher-clocked dual-core processor should be on the cards.
Likewise,4G LTE connectivity should be available. Considering that many of the top-selling smartphones in the United States are compatible with these increasingly widespread high-speed wireless networks, Apple should add in this capability to compete effectively.
