Samsung Galaxy S3 Reaches 10 Millionth Unit Sold vs Apple's iPhone Sales Slump
Samsung reported to have told over 10 million Galaxy S3 (GS3) devices, surpassing early projections. Demand for the GS3 has been consistently high, previously causing carriers to delay the launch last month.
Samsung's gain is Apple's struggle as the Los Angeles Times report that sales of the iPhone 4S have slowed.
In comparison to the iPhone 4S, the latest Galaxy phone has a bigger 4.8-inch high definition screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720. Other features include an 8-megapixel camera with 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE connection, and 1.4GHz quad-core processor. The availability to record video in HD 1080p is another catch for users.
Samsung recently has passed Apple as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, according to Reuters.
The upcoming iPhone 5 is another factor for the recent slump in Apple phone sales. Apple sold more than 35 million iPhone 4S during the last quarter, but Pacific Crest Securities' Andy Hargreaves told Bloomberg that it wouldn't be a surprise if this quarter's numbers estimate to 25 million.
A survey on ChangeWave Research showed that 14 percent of consumers are "very likely" to get the next iPhone while 17 percent say "somewhat likely." The numbers are higher compared to last year when only 10 percent responded "very likely" for the iPhone 4S.
Portfolio manager Tim Lesko told Reuters, "I expect Apple to beat Apple's guidance, but I don't know whether they will beat Wall Street's guidance."
Apple will announce their latest quarter earnings this Tuesday, July 24.
Apple's new iPhone is expected to be released in October, and it's expected to have a bigger screen but a thinner model. Rumors further indicate that the iPhone 5 will be powered by iOS 6, which has already launched a third beta version. It will also boast a 4-inch Retina display screen with resolutions of 1136x640, have 1GB of RAM, and just as the GS3, it might have 4G LTE connectivity.
