iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S – a comparison between dock connectors

The next generation iPhone is rumored to feature a smaller dock connector.

Previous reports pointed to an 8-pin or 19-pin port and now French siteNowehereelse.fr has posted images that compare the older 30-pin connector from the iPhone 4S to the 9-pin one that is rumored to be featured in the next iPhone. This change would allow Apple to move headphone jack at the bottom of the device and increase the size of the speaker / microphone. The pictures show that there is a metal ring inside the casing cutout for the new dock connector. This ring is believed to make the port compatible with the MagSafe standard which would allow users to insert the cable in either orientation. Chinese newspaper Apple Daily has published scans of the iPhone 5 enclosures which reveal that the device will measure just 7.6 mm thick, which makes it 18 % thinner than the 9.3 mm iPhone 4S.
